Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently signed a memorandum of understandings (MoU) with the National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN) to develop and manage a credible, robust and reliable database for the domestic cotton industry. At the event, statistician general Simon Harry called for massive production of cotton to revive the nation’s industries.

The data will enable the government to determine the status of cotton production and the steps needed to improve, Harry said. Thirty three states in the country are into cotton production.

The collaboration would also help the government monitor the sector’s development and impact of different interventions, such as the ones by the Central Bank of Nigeria through its Anchor Borrower Programme and the Raw Material Research and Development Council, according to media reports in the country.
