Boston Medical Center Health System named Dr. Alastair Bell as its permanent CEO.

Bell became president of the health system in November and took over as interim CEO in March. He joined Boston Medical in 2012 as chief operating officer, following a stint at McKinsey & Co., leading the North American payer and provider practice.

Bell replaced Kate Walsh, who was named secretary of Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Health and Human Services earlier this year.

Boston Medical logs 1 million patient visits each year at its 514-bed academic medical center. It also operates the WellSense Health Plan, a Medicaid managed-care organization with 740,000 members, and Boston University Medical Group, which has 800 physicians, clinicians and educators across 18 departments.

Boston Medical issued $232 million in sustainability bonds in February to fund renovations at the medical center that will help reduce energy consumption. Plans call for 70 new inpatient beds, five new operating rooms and improved outpatient services, with construction scheduled to wrap in 2025.
