Mercy Executive Vice President Steve Mackin will become the health system’s president and CEO next April, the not-for-profit company announced Monday.

Lynn Britton, who has been president and CEO and president for the 13 years, will transition into a new role as executive chair of St. Louis-based Mercy’s board of directors. Mackin will work alongside Britton during the transition.

“Years ago, following in the footsteps of the Sisters of Mercy, we carefully designed a succession plan to make sure that the next president and CEO would have the knowledge, experience and heart to serve our coworkers, patients and communities,” Britton said in a news release. “Steve was selected from our senior leadership team, and I know he will lead Mercy into an even brighter future with strategies in place that will make healthcare more accessible for all.”

Britton oversaw the creation of a new supply chain operation for the multi-state system and led the rebuilding of Mercy’s Joplin, Missouri, hospital in 2011 after a tornado destroyed it. He took over as CEO at what was then called Sisters of Mercy Health System in 2009, succeeding John Sullivan.

Britton first joined the system in the early 1990s leading materials management at one hospital, then rose to became vice president of resource optimization for the entire system.

Mackin started his career at for-profit Cancer Treatment Centers of America of Boca Raton, Florida, and he joined Mercy as a senior executive of business line development in 2017.

“I have had the privilege and honor to serve under Lynn and learn servant leadership firsthand,” said Mackin. “I am humbled by the board’s decision and I will work diligently to serve our coworkers, patients and communities in a way that reflects our Sisters’ legacy—a bias for action, dignity, hospitality, right relationships and fullness for life.”
