Insurance broker eHealth names Fran Soistman CEO


Online insurance broker eHealth’s new CEO will be Fran Soistman, the company announced Tuesday.

Soistman will join eHealth’s board of directors in addition to being chief executive as of Nov. 1. Current CEO Scott Flanders will retire after leading the company for five years and serving on the board for more than a decade. Flanders will act as a consultant to the company until the end of the year.

“Our markets are continuing to evolve, with consumers increasingly looking online for healthcare and with key carrier partners increasing their focus on enrollment quality,” Dale Wolf, who will become chair of eHealth’s board, said in a news release. “Fran brings an extensive record of driving performance, meeting challenges head-on and exceeding expectations.”

During his forty years in the industry, Soistman has held leadership positions at numerous healthcare and insurance companies, including Coventry Health Care, Principal Health Care and CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland. Soistman also co-founded Jessamine Healthcare, which manages a network of healthcare providers.

Recently, Soistman was executive vice president at CVS Health and president of government services for its Aetna subsidiary, where he led strategic execution and growth plans for the insurer’s Medicare, Medicaid and Federal Employees Health Benefit lines of business.

“I am honored to join the team at this important juncture,” Soistman said in a news release. “I intend to move forward thoughtfully, but also with a sense of urgency. My primary focus in the first 60 days will be our sales and operations during the Medicare annual enrollment period season.”

eHealth, which was founded in 1999 as an information resource allowing consumers to compare and buy health insurance plans, offers policies from more than 200 insurers to customers in the individual and Medicare markets. The company served has about 5 million customers with $582.8 million in revenue last year.
