Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe was on Friday shot at in the city of Nara in western Japan, reported public broadcaster NHK. According to reports, Abe was taken to a hospital bleeding as he collapsed after the attack while delivering a speech.
Abe is not conscious, Reuters reported, adding that the former Japanese PM appears to be in cardio-respiratory arrest.
Police said that Abe was shot from behind and a male suspect has been detained, NHK reported.

An NHK reporter, who was present on the scene, said they could hear two consecutive bangs during Abe’s speech.
