Textiles & apparel among focused sectors at Make in Odisha conclave

Indian state of Odisha is focussing on textiles and apparel to attract investment. The third edition of Make in Odisha conclave is trying to attract investors in the textile sector through subsidy, soft loans, and other facilities. The state does not grow cotton, but it has a traditionally skilled workforce to produce apparel including traditional sarees. 

The conclave began in Bhubaneswar from November 30 and will conclude on December 4. According to state officials, the government has offered attractive terms for investments. Investors can get a capital grant of 20 per cent for a project costing up to ₹20 crore and interest-free loan up to 10 per cent with a maximum limit of ₹10 crore.

Odisha has ensured ready availability of developed land with adequate infrastructure in several textile parks, skilled manpower by setting up centres of excellence and ITI, along with creation of new mega parks, lowering the cost of production and logistics and encouraging new entrants through start-ups. The conclave will have two dedicated sessions on textiles and apparel and sourcing of handlooms and handicrafts. 

Odisha is not a significant cotton producing state but is making efforts to improve cotton production. Supply of the natural fibre will not be an issue for the state because of its proximity with Andhra Pradesh and other cotton-producing states. Odisha is known for its ethnic wear and sarees such as sambalpuri, bomkai and berhampuri, which are famous across India and the world. Traditionally skilled workforce for apparel is available in the state abundantly.
