Sutter Health named Mark Sevco its chief operating officer, the integrated nonprofit health system said Friday.

Sevco, who is president of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospitals in its health services division, will join the Sacramento-based, 23-hospital system June 5. Sutter President and CEO Warner Thomas has also served as the interim COO since he joined the organization in December. James Conforti, the prior COO who became interim CEO in January 2022 after the former CEO Sarah Krevans retired, left the system in December.

“(Mark) has proven operational experience integrating and aligning care delivery models and teams across large health systems, and in both hospital and ambulatory settings,” Thomas said in a news release.

Sevco will work alongside a chief physician executive in a newly created dyad model. The search for the chief physician executive is ongoing, a Sutter spokesperson said.

Sutter reported $278 million in operating income on $14.77 billion of operating revenue in 2022, up from $199 million in operating income on $14.23 billion of operating revenue in 2021. It racked up $578 million in investment losses in 2022.
