Lifespan restructures Rhode Island, Hasbro Children’s Hospitals roles

Lifespan is restructuring its senior leadership team, resulting in the departure of two key executives.

Dr. Saul Weingart, president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, is stepping down, effective immediately, after two years in the role, Lifespan President and CEO John Fernandez said in a company email Wednesday.

Dr. Steven Lampert, president of Lifespan Physician Group, will retire at the end of the month after six and a half years in the role. Lifespan Physician Group is Rhode Island’s largest multispecialty practice with more than 950 physicians and employees.

Fernandez said the changes will drive more accountability and faster decision-making with physician input.

Providence, Rhode Island-based Lifespan is creating a combined role for chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, reporting to Fernandez. The system is conducting a national search to fill the position, along with a chief physician officer, executive vice president of ambulatory and chief of staff.

“The healthcare of 10, 20, 30 years from now is going to look much different than it does today,” Fernandez said in the email. This means different ways of structuring, delivering and supporting (i.e., funding) patient care. Our organization needs to evolve to adapt to the changing and challenging healthcare landscape in front of us.”

Fernandez joined Lifespan earlier this year from Mass General Brigham, replacing Dr. Timothy Babineau, who stepped down in May.

Lifespan reported a $186.8 million net loss for its fiscal year 2022, ended Sept. 30. It sustained $76.3 million in operating losses. In February 2022, Lifespan and Care New England, also based in Providence, scrapped merger plans due to regulatory opposition
