Jobs report shows healthcare hiring increase in August


Healthcare employers added an estimated 48,200 jobs in August as hiring rose from the previous month, according to preliminary U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday.  

The economy gained 315,000 jobs in August, with gains in professional and business services, healthcare and retail trade. An estimated 1.9 million people reported being unable to work last month due to closures or lost business linked to the pandemic, the BLS reported. 

The overall jobless rate was 3.7% last month, with approximately 6 million people unemployed. In July, the unemployment rate rebounded to its level from February 2020, the month before the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. 

Healthcare has added 412,000 jobs in the past year. Healthcare employment is showing signs of recovery, although still down 0.2% in August compared with pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. There were notable gains in physician offices, hospitals and nursing facilities.

The BLS also downward revised its June and July data by 107,000 jobs.
