CommonSpirit buys Steward Health Care’s Utah hospitals, clinics

CommonSpirit Health finalized its acquisition of Steward Health Care’s Utah locations, the health systems said Monday.

The deal, announced earlier this year, includes more than 35 clinics, imaging and urgent care centers and five hospitals—Davis Hospital and Medical Center in Layton; Jordan Valley Medical Center in West Jordan; Jordan Valley Medical Center-West Valley Campus; Mountain Point Medical Center in Lehi; and Salt Lake Regional Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Centura Health, based in Centennial, Colorado, will manage the operations. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dallas-based Steward has for years been looking for a partner to purchase its Utah locations. For-profit system HCA Healthcare sought to buy the five hospitals in 2021 to expand its Utah presence, but called off the deal less than a year later amid opposition from federal regulators.

Chicago-based CommonSpirit, which operates 145 hospitals and more than 2,200 care sites across 23 states, said it is changing the facilities to the Holy Cross brand, a nod to the nonprofit system’s Catholic background. More than 3,000 Utah employees in good standing were asked to stay on, according to a news release.
