China’s rail freight volume surges 5.9% y-o-y in Jan-Jul 2022


The volume of China’s rail cargo increased by 5.9 per cent year-on-year in the first seven months of 2022. Over 2.89 billion tonnes of goods were carried via the country’s railways during the period, according to data from China’s ministry of transport.

Around 414.33 million tonnes of cargo were managed by China’s railways in July 2022 alone, which is a rise of 12.3 per cent from the same period the year before. Rail freight volume is said to be an important indicator of economic activity.

Moreover, the data also revealed that the turnover volume of cargo traffic via China’s railways jumped 9.2 per cent year-on-year to reach 2.05 trillion tonne kilometres during the period from January to July, 2022.
